A city is a huge area or region of land inside a country where people set up colonization. It can be described as a perpetual and crammed settlement with executively specific boundaries and particularly inhabited by humans earning their livelihood through non-agricultural means, unlike villages. Few bible verses about cities that will help one understand their biblical references better.
What Does Bible Say about Cities?
Exodus 1:11
“So they put slave masters over them to oppress them with forced labor, and they built Pithom and Rameses as store cities for Pharaoh.”
And on that account, they appointed a ruler of the servants on top of their heads, in order to torment and tyrannize them with compelled hard work, and they constructed Rameses and Pithom as store cities for the sake of Pharaoh.
Joshua 10:2
“He and his people were very much alarmed at this, because Gibeon was an important city, like one of the royal cities; it was larger than Ai, and all its men were good fighters.”
He and his followers were shocked at this to a great extent, and this is due to the fact that Gibeon was a city of great significance, similar to one of the regal cities; it was greater than Ai, and all the men who inhabited it were warriors of substantial merit.
Kings 9:19
“As well as all his store cities and the towns for his chariots and for his horses – whatever he desired to build in Jerusalem, in Lebanon and throughout all the territory he ruled.”
And on that account, he constructed all his store cities as well as all the towns for his horses and his horse-drawn carriages – he built all the things that he wanted to in Jerusalem, in Lebanon, and in all the dominions that were under his reign.
Chronicles 8:4
“Abishua, Naaman, Ahoah”
Tadmor in the desert was constructed by him as well, along with each and every store city he had constructed in Hamath.
Numbers 35:6
“Six of the towns you give the Levites will be cities of refuge, to which a person who has killed someone may flee. In addition, give them forty-two other towns.”
And on that account, all six of the cities that you have furnished the Levites with will turn into cities that offer shelter and protection, to which a man who has put an end to someone’s life may run. And apart from all these, provide them with forty-two other cities.

Numbers 13:28
“But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of Anak there.”
However, all the men who inhabit that place are strong and influential, and the towns are surrounded with protection and are huge. And there, we even witnessed the successors of Anak with our eyes.
Joshua 10:20
“So Joshua and the Israelites defeated them completely, but a few survivors managed to reach their fortified cities.”
And on that account, the Israelites and Joshua completely brought them to their knees, but a few of them who had managed to survive were able to get as far as their protected towns.
Chronicles 17:2
Nathan replied to David, “Whatever you have in mind, do it, for God is with you.”
He appointed the armed forces on duty in all the protected towns of Judah and set up the regiments in Judah and in the cities of Ephraim that his father, Asa, had invaded and taken over.
Chronicles 17:19
“LORD. For the sake of your servant and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made known all these great promises.”
These were the people who were in the service of the monarch, apart from the ones whom he had appointed on duty in the protected towns all over Judah.
Deuteronomy 1:28
“Where can we go? Our brothers have made our hearts melt in fear. They say, ‘The people are stronger and taller than we are; the cities are large, with walls up to the sky. We even saw the Anakites there.”
Where do you think we can make our way to? Our brothers have caused our hearts to dissolve in terror. They say that the men living there are extremely powerful and are way taller than us; the towns are pretty huge, with walls almost reaching up to the heavens. We even witnessed the Anakites with our eyes there.
Deuteronomy 3:5
“All these cities were fortified with high walls and with gates and bars, and there were also a great many unwalled villages.”
And all of these towns were protected and secured with walls of great height and gateways and rails, and there were a huge number of imposing villages with no barriers or walls.
Numbers 32:17
“But we will arm ourselves for battle and go ahead of the Israelites until we have brought them to their place. Meanwhile our women and children will live in fortified cities, for protection from the inhabitants of the land.”
And on that account, we will shield ourselves with weapons for the fight and make our way ahead of the Israelites till the time we have fetched them back to their place. And for the time being, our children and women will put up in the towns surrounded with protection in order to stay safe and secure from the natives of the land.
Genesis 41:48
“Joseph collected all the food produced in those seven years of abundance in Egypt and stored it in the cities. In each city he put the food grown in the fields surrounding it.”
Joseph piled up all the food manufactured during those seven years of prosperity in Egypt and set them aside in the towns. In each and every city, he laid down the food produced in the meadows that surrounded it.
Numbers 32:36
“Beth Nimrah and Beth Haran as fortified cities, and built pens for their flocks.”
And Beth-nimrah and Beth-haran were all towns surrounded with protection and security, having an enclosure for their herds.
Genesis 13:12
“Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom.”
And Abram resided on the soils of Canaan, whereas on the other hand, Lot resided amidst the cities of the lowlands and set up his camps near Sodom.
Chronicles 11:23
“And he struck down an Egyptian who was five cubits tall. Although the Egyptian had a spear like a weaver’s rod in his hand, Benaiah went against him with a club. He snatched the spear from the Egyptian’s hand and killed him with his own spear.”
And he behaved in a wise manner, spreading some of his descendants all over the districts of Benjamin and Judah, and to all the towns surrounded with protection. He provided them with ample amount of provisions and got hold of a number of wives for them.
Deuteronomy 6:10
“When the LORD your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you – a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build.”
And your good God, the almighty Heavenly Father who is the Supreme Being of all the universe, will lead you into the soil that he had promised to your ancestors, to Jacob and Isaac and Abraham, to provide you with the land having huge, prosperous towns that had not been constructed by you.
Deuteronomy 28:52
“They will lay siege to all the cities throughout your land until the high fortified walls in which you trust fall down. They will besiege all the cities throughout the land the LORD your God is giving you.”
They will surround each and every city with armed forces all over your land, till the time the lofty walls for protection, in which you have put your faith, collapses to the ground. They will lay siege to every town all over the land that the almighty Heavenly Father, the Supreme Being of all the universe, is furnishing you with.
Deuteronomy 9:1
“Hear, Israel: You are now about to cross the Jordan to go in and dispossess nations greater and stronger than you, with large cities that have walls up to the sky.”
Listen with utmost attention, all the people of Israel: At this moment, you are going to make your way across the Jordan and show the door to the provinces that are lager in size and more powerful than you and have huge cities with lofty walls reaching up to the sky.
Joshua 14:12
“Now give me this hill country that the LORD promised me that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and fortified, but, the LORD helping me, I will drive them out just as he said.”
And at this moment, I want you to provide me with this nation of hills that was promised to me by the good God, the almighty Heavenly Father, on the previous day. You had heard it with your own ears at that time that the Anakites were present there and their towns were huge and surrounded with high-level protection, but with the holy Lord, the Supreme Being of all the universe, by my side, I will be able to cast them out just as I was told to.
Chronicles 21:3
But Joab replied, “May the LORD multiply his troops a hundred times over. My lord the king, are they not all my lord’s subjects? Why does my lord want to do this? Why should he bring guilt on Israel?”
Their guardian had furnished them with a huge amount of gifts like gold and silver and other priceless articles. He had also provided them with cities surrounded with high-level protection in Judah, but he had handed over the kingdom to Jehoram because of the fact that he was his eldest son.

Chronicles 11:6

Rehoboam set up his residence in Jerusalem and constructed cities for protection in Judah: Beth Zur, Adoraim, Zorah, Lachish, Bethlehem, Adullam, Etam, Ziph, Hebron, Gath, Azekah, Tekoa, Mareshah, Ajialon, and Soko. These were the protected and secured towns in Benjamin and Judah.
Isaiah 36:1
“In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah’s reign, Sennacherib king of Assyria attacked all the fortified cities of Judah and captured them.”
During the fourteenth year of the rule of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib, the monarch of Assyria, pounced on all the cities surrounded with high-level protection in Judah and took them over.
Chronicles 11:11
“This is the list of David’s mighty warriors: Jashobeam, a Hakmonite, was chief of the officers; he raised his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed in one encounter.”
Chronicles 11:12
“Next to him was Eleazar son of Dodai the Ahohite, one of the three mighty warriors.”
He made their arms and weaponry stronger and appointed officers to look after their armaments, with ample amount of provisions of wine, olive oil, and food. He placed arrows and shields throughout each and every city and made them very powerful. And as a result of that, Benjamin and Judah were under his control.
Kings 19:24-25
I have excavated wells in distant soils and quenched my thirst with the water from those wells there. Just like the soles of my feet, I have dehydrated all the rivers that used to flow in Egypt. Did you not hear it with your own ears? I had ordained it a long time back. I had devised the plan during the ancient times, and presently, I fetched it to let go, seeing that you have transformed cities surrounded with high-level protection into a heap of rocks.
Isaiah 17:9
In that day their strong cities, which they left because of the Israelites, will be like places abandoned to thickets and undergrowth. And all will be desolation.
And on the day that they abandoned their mighty and powerful towns because of the Israelites, the cities would transform into forsaken places covered in undergrowth and coppice. And anything to be left there would be loneliness.
Ezekiel 26:19
“This is what the Sovereign LORD says: When I make you a desolate city, like cities no longer inhabited, and when I bring the ocean depths over you and its vast waters cover you”
And what the almighty Heavenly Father, the Sovereign God says is that, at the time that he constructs a barren town for our sake, such as a city that is not occupied by anyone anymore, or at the time that he fetches the ocean over us, and shrouds us with the depths of its limitless water, it is only then we will realize what have we done.
Joshua 20:2
“Tell the Israelites to designate the cities of refuge, as I instructed you through Moses.”
And lay orders upon the people of Israel to appoint all the cities of protection and security, as I had passed on my commands through Moses.
Jeremiah 4:5
“Announce in Judah and proclaim in Jerusalem and say: “Sound the trumpet throughout the land!’ Cry aloud and say: “Gather together! Let us flee to the fortified cities!”
You should declare in Judah and pronounce in Jerusalem and ask them to blow the trumpet all over the land. Cry out loud and ask them to assemble together, and suggest that you should run away to the cities surrounded with high-level protection.
Isaiah 1:7
“Your country is desolate, your cities burned with fire; your fields are being stripped by foreigners right before you, laid waste as when overthrown by strangers.”
Pay close attention, how bleak and barren your nation looks, your towns have been burnt down to ashes; your meadows are being emptied and peeled off by the immigrants right in front of your eyes, the fields are desolate, and everything is being brought down to the ground by foreigners.
Joshua 11:12
“Joshua took all these royal cities and their kings and put them to the sword. He totally destroyed them, as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded.”
Joshua 11:13
“Yet Israel did not burn any of the cities built on their mounds – except Hazor, which Joshua burned.”
Joshua laid hold of all these princely states and their monarchs and subjected them to the edge of the sword. He completely and relentlessly knocked them down, just what Moses had ordered, who was in service of the almighty Heavenly Father, the Supreme Being of all the universe. In spite of all this, Israel did not set fire to any of the towns that were constructed on their hills – except Hazor, which was burnt down by Joshua.
Hosea 8:14
“Israel has forgotten their Maker and built palaces; Judah has fortified many towns. But I will send fire on their cities that will consume their fortresses.”
Israel has not remembered the one who built them in the first place and has constructed huge mansions; Judah has provided protection to a number of cities. But I will set fire to their towns that will devour their fortresses.
