A confession is an official proclamation where one owns up about his faults and sins and pleads guilty for the crimes he has committed. Confession is when one acknowledges his mistakes that one would apparently want to be kept hidden.
A person confesses his mistakes only when he realizes his sins and feels ashamed for doing it. Therefore confession reduces the extent of punishment that one would receive for carrying out sinful acts. Few bible verses about confessions.

“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”
And on that account, you should own up about your acts of wrongdoing to one another, and join hands in prayer for the well-being of your companions, so that you may be cured of anything and everything. The act of devotion by a moral and honest person has a huge influence as it gets fulfilled quite efficiently.
Proverbs 28:13
“Those who conceal their sins do not prosper, but those who confess and renounce them find mercy.”
